Why do I need a veterinary referral for animal behaviour services?

A veterinary referral is essential to ensure that any underlying health issues contributing to your dog’s behaviour are identified. Many behavioural issues have a medical basis, and working with your vet allows me to take a holistic approach.

If you plan to claim on your pet insurance, a referral is also typically required. As a member of the APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors) and the ABTC (Animal Behaviour and Training Council), referrals are also part of my ethical and professional standards.

I’ve tried other methods without success. How can your approach help?

My methods are scientifically tested, tried, and proven to be effective by accredited professionals, including the ABTC and APBC. Every dog is unique, so I develop a personalised plan tailored to the specific behavioural challenges your dog faces.

Through positive reinforcement and a compassionate, holistic approach, I target the root causes of your dog’s behaviour, leading to lasting change.

What’s the difference between a clinical animal behaviourist and a regular dog trainer?

Clinical animal behaviourists have advanced education and accreditation in animal behaviour science, which allows them to treat more complex behavioural issues. While trainers may focus on obedience, I dig deeper into the root causes of behaviour, often collaborating with veterinarians.

My approach ensures a well-rounded plan addressing both the dog’s mental and physical health, with ongoing support for the owner.

How long does it take to see improvements in my dog’s behaviour?

Behavioural change is a process, and lasting results require time. My training plan follows four structured stages:

Identify and Address/Manage: Initial consultation to understand the behaviour and develop a management plan.

Ensure All Needs Are Met: I ensure your dog’s mental, emotional, and physical needs are fulfilled.

Manage Triggers and Manipulate Learning: Implement positive strategies to manage and change behaviour.

Review and Adjust: Ongoing reviews and adjustments to the plan.

This typically includes one initial consultation and an average of five follow-up sessions. However, every dog is different, and it’s important to recognise that achieving lasting results with proven methods takes time.

What types of behavioural issues can you help with?

I offer solutions for a variety of behavioural and training issues, including:

  • Obedience Training & Behaviour Solutions: Teaching desired behaviours and ensuring they stick.
  • Problem Behaviours Towards People: Addressing fear, aggression, or overexcitement around people.
  • Problem Behaviours with Other Dogs: Improving interactions and resolving aggression or fear toward other dogs.
  • Problems at Home, Separation Anxiety: Helping dogs cope with being left alone.
  • Problems at Home, Wave of Destruction: Resolving destructive behaviours like chewing, digging, or excessive barking.

What support do you provide after the initial sessions?

Following the initial assessment, you’ll receive:

A tailored training plan specific to your dog’s needs.

Access to video demonstrations and detailed step-by-step guides.

Ongoing phone and email support.

Follow-up sessions to review progress and make necessary adjustments.

Why is your service worth the investment?

Investing in my behaviour services is an investment in your dog’s well-being and your peace of mind. My approach combines advanced education, years of experience, and accreditation by leading organisations like the APBC and ABTC.

Unlike standard trainers, I focus on long-term behavioural change, addressing the root causes of issues rather than offering temporary fixes.

By choosing me, you’re ensuring that your dog receives ethical, science-backed care tailored to their unique needs, resulting in a happier, healthier dog and a stronger bond between you both. My services provide the long-term value of a more peaceful, stress-free life with your dog.
